GAF is established to provide support to children living with sickle cell disease, support treatments and cures, provide routine medication for sickle cell patients, raise awareness, advocate for better access to healthcare, and ultimately improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease by educating the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about sickle cell disease and its challenges; promoting early diagnosis and screening programs; and working to ensure equitable access to quality medical care for sickle cell patients across different communities in Nigeria.
Key aspects of our work include:
- Provision of Routine Medication:
Provision of routine drugs that boost the immunity of SCD patients. This takes place every Thursday at the Sickle Cell Clinic of Adeoyo State Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. The drugs used in treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD) include antimetabolites, analgesics, antibiotics, vaccines, and nutritional agents.
- Patient Support:
Providing educational resources, counseling services, and support groups for children living with sickle cell disease.
- Advocacy:
Lobbying governments and healthcare organizations to improve policies and access to care for sickle cell patients.
- Community Outreach:
Raising awareness about sickle cell disease through public campaigns and educational programs.
- Genetic Counseling:
Educating individuals at risk of passing on the sickle cell trait to their children through genetic counseling services.
- Healthcare provider education:
Training healthcare professionals on the proper diagnosis and management of sickle cell disease.
